General Gyaan on selection Procedure?

Question - Sir,
I have done B.V.A.(B.F.A.) in applied arts and have applied for the VC course in IDC......I got CEED AIR 140.
What is my chance of getting a call for the further rounds from IDC??
Also can u pls tell me what do they see in a VC applicant??
How should i prepare for the further rounds...n what kind of portfolio should i have for the interview....i have done a little photography during my college and have made campaigns and also some illustrations......what all should i bring and how many sheets as the interview last 10-15 mins. as is written in the IDC site.

First of all as you are BFA you need to really stand out of at least many who pass every year and given it's a direct art course you better have best skills almost ranking in top 15/20 across India.

Secondly, you have to have a very good communication skills, as it's must many BFA lack on this.

Third on your portfolio - typically for VC they would look for your skills on themes, what you say is it really in there in your portfolio from idea, metaphors etc. MOre than how many what can you cover best may be top 5/6 works you can showcase but ensure you can showcase them well in about 10/15 mins. Try to cover different aspects in works like photogrpahy, sculptures, sketching, concept, abstracts etc. Do not bore the examiners with tonnes of work but just one type. In general typically interviews long for good candidates, so do not worry much about the interview time...

Also in general it's seen that if you are over confident or show you know everything under the world - you may even be asked "ehy you want to join design course? you knwo it all already?"

Another note for all - no of KGs of work does not matter, you may even see people before interiew showing work to all other students around, with huge portfolios etc. don't worry about it. I know even a candidate who just did 2 scupltures in soap got selected

Hi Friends and CEED aspirants am adding some sample questions here for this year's junta!

1. Draw 20 quick line drawings of things which has triangular shape
2. Draw / Render an Iron in 3D drawing. Use of perspectives is plus.
3. See the following picture and give 10 observations for the various personas
a. Indian person
b. Someone from USA
c. Someone from say nepal

4. You know many times the tooth brushes after use remain wet, and also remain open and has a chance of catching air contaminations or insects. Try to solve this problem by designing a new toothbrush

5. Small Kids in the school forget many things like pencils, books, rubbers etc. Write your views about how would you solve this issue?

6. You may know various shapes like triangle, circle, random shapes, tree like etc. Assume you ask a scientist, mill worker, army man, female fashion model to draw any one shape, can you draw what would they draw?

7. Draw 3 sample titles with showcasing different font and names which you can think of for following,
a. Action movie title
b. Romantic movie title
c. Sci-fi movie
d. A Movie based on world war

8. Imagine you are leading a team for an astro-mission, and you are a lead designer of the space vehicle. What are the top 5 design factors you have to focus while building it?

9. Write how a straws are made? If you know there are straws which can bend with corrugations in the middle, write how can they be made?

10. Draw a circle, pentagon, rectangle by hand

11. Indian railway tickets has advertises behind the tickets. Can you give your thoughts on what brands should advertise there and why?

12. Draw a cell phone

13. You have a a wire, some metal sheets, and some screws - come out with a design using this material for a newspaper stand. Try to use as minimum material as possible and denote how much material, sizes, any other salient points of your design too

14. There is a metal pillar with 100 screws holding it at the bottom, One of the screws always get's broken due to some reasons. How do you solve this issue.

15. There is a spherical tank which needs to be calibrated and sent to a big company. How would you calibrate this tank without really filling it with any liquid.

16. You have some bamboo sticks and paper. Create a Kite which can fly with it. Do not have the kite shape same as usual square shape. Ensure take care of all considerations like air flow, where you will tie the strings, any special techniques needs to fly it. Show it with pictures.

15. "I want to eat" - you need to message this to someone only using hand movements. Draw some key hand sketches. Communication is very imp here, drawing skills are secondary.

16. Write approx. sizes for the following items in cm or inches. You can give range if you wish to
a. Diameter of a 100 watt bulb
b. legth, bredth, height of a camel compass box which kids use
c. Legth of a pencil
d. Height of a table
e. Height of a typical room
f. Legth of say a maruti car

I think this would be a good start for this year. You may walso want to read and observe various objcets in and around you. Prepare to draw human elements, full body or parts (develope your own skills for this do not try to mimic what others can draw) you can even use human figures in differenet postures some example are

For the material

You can take with you

1. Colors - Try using pastels or pencil colors... water colors unless you can use them is not a good option
2. Cesors (imp- sometimes there are quetsion like if you cut a folded paper say on croner how ill the final thing look like on opening so it helps... but ideally i would recommend you should solve this mentally too...)
3. Different color sketch pens to highlight text or image borders n all...
4. Scales / stencils - circles, triangles etc....
5. Compass to draw circles (indeally any drawing tool....is allowed)

What is or may not be allowed - chitsheets, papers, symbol sheets, stickers, (air bursh ;-) ), etc....

Ideally you will not need calculators, logtables etc. too...

Remember: Time is the key! as the questions are open ended some time you may like a question and want to answer in too much detail which may not let you finish the paper.... answer based on the marks each question has... Also there are ticky quesitons... sometimes the question looks too simple but may carry lot of marks so assume that this question's answer may not be simple....(like I'd one simple question abt faces.... with some options to choose what's the the next face... and it has 8 marks.... atually the crucks there was they were mirror images than simply shape changes...)

Cancelled: Ceed Summit on 23-24-25th December @ Bangalore

Hi Readers!
Due to inadequate show up for the summit/session for 23-24-25th I could not conduct this session. Also there is a global IIT Alumni meet in Mumbai ( http://www.paniit2006.org/ ) where some of the speakers would like to go as it's business critical for some of us.

However for those who have shown the interest in the sessions I'm planning to send you the material sometime in next 2 weeks which will be collected for private circulation only, please do not circulate the same as it has got views from the speakers and is not a public information.

CEED training/councelling session in December in Bangalore

Hi Ceed Aspirants

I'm planning to conduct a concelling session than classes on CEED this year in december @ Bangalore. This session will be conducted by experienced people who qualified ceed and got passed out from IDC and IDDCs.

Mostly this will be a 3 day session where sr. people will share their views on not just ceed but what beyond that too.

As of now I've a confirmation from about 6 speakers from different yrs of batches which will help you know what have they been asked and what ere their answers which make them qualify. Again as my blog says there are no definite answers for design questions so there is plan to give you a guidance on what are some key points which you would worry about while answering the questions.

Moreover you will get a dedicated time from these people to ask questions in person during these sessions.

So i would like to see you all in bangalore in december. the tentative dates are 23, 24 and 25th December.

Quick thinking skills

This time am going to talk about “quick thinking” which is another essential need for the CEED entrants. Let’s start with a simple question – how may linear objects do you know in the world which you have seen so far (example- pen, pencil etc) can you think of more than 20?, it’s looks really simple but equally hard to think and come out with different objects in the world which are linear in shape.

This is where how you look at things comes into picture? Have you even worried if a TV is a cubical, spherical object or how a TV box and say Maruti Van possibly related in shape?... again these are very drastic examples but as a future designer world looks upon you to think both in actual world as well as abstract world, have you ever though why some cars have animal names, what’s metaphor?, why someone says this truck looks like a monster etc. This is one of the key skills which is sometimes tapped in CEED examination. Now you may say huh! I wish I knew about this earlier I would have started doing this from many years, but believe me this knowledge is not simple to store in the smaller few gigs of our human database, but yes again it’s not impossible too. I cannot say if this skills cannot be developed but I’ve seen people born to see things in a different way than a typical average person whom we meet day n day out. But my assumption here can be wrong and so assuming that I can put some pointers which you may want to try out to get some assistance for your examination and later if you become a designer tomorrow…

Your exam may give you some shape and ask you to generate many objects from that shape, so do start looking at things around you from small battery in wrist watch to planes and missiles. Think about them a bit and leave it! While doing this do not think of any exam paper, just analyze few things from your know how like – shape, color, purpose, function, how it functions etc. Try to ask one simple question – do I know now something about this “thing” which if I ask 100 people only one would know or have thought about it! – if the answer it yes you have achieved the knowledge J again this looks hard, but it’s not so hard… if I tell you the inc pens functions based on the fundamental of gravity as well as when the ink is on paper it’s because of molecular attraction or adhesion, you may have got it! But again this may be controversial to say – but something like this keeps your designer side of brain ticking which helps you apply same principles elsewhere.

About Portfolio - Doubts raised

Portfolio is not must have, this is primarily design world term. If you are from engg background you may not hear this.
Typically architects have this compiled over 4 yrs of their term. Again this is not a must have, whati's imp is you need to show your creative work during the interview....

What is portfolio - portfolio is nothing but a compilation of work - actual physical samples of your work or photographs of the same. Remember very imp is do not try to copy any body else's work it's very easy to predict in the interview if you have done this or someone else.

Here are few examples of what people can carry - from my experience and what i have seen in case of successful candidates
- paintings done
- some scribbled pictures
- physical crafted things - people try diff things like soap carvings, clay models etc. again if you are an architect you have an edge, but engg donn get scared your knowledge can come very positive. As i mentioned on the blog trying to user whatever your knowledge it may be as creatively as possible is what carries marks
- photographs of your creative work - home furniture you have designed, something creative you have designed for usage (some table-cum-chair-cum-bed), your designed stage in case of your college gathering etc.
- your handwriting samples - if it's showable, or calligraphy etc.

Some details about the examination

There are many interesting questions in the CEED exam paper which you may know a lot, or you think you can do much better. Time is the real key, so you need to make sure you give only required weight in your answer based on the marks allocated to the questions.

Looking at the paper there are very few questions which you will think you cannot answer, and that’s the trick, as CEED is based on judging people based on their creative skills, observations, thinking, extrapolation, etc skills the questions here are pretty common to the world we see, and that’s why it’s hard to get a question which you may not think you cannot solve. If I say design a screw driver to open screws which are deep inside like you may have seen in old radios, every one can think of some solution or at least you will not say I cannot do it, some may take time, some may come quickly, so the real key is how differently can you solve this problem and how much your solution is feasible on various aspects of design (which I will cover later)…

Some possible answers for this could be –
- Recommend changing the design of such screws and fixtures itself for which you need a special tools
- Think of a lighted pointer screw driver
- Attach some magnifier to the handle of the screw driver to enlarge the whole picture
- Think of some way to get the screw driver and the screw visibility on top, say you can think of models like if you see water filled tank the bottom looks much closer, so if you fill it with water you may see the screw little upwards etc.

Again you may think some of these are crazy, but it really matters how you solve this issue and how different and creative it is than an average. Just designing a screw driver for this with long neck may not fly!.

Ideally if you can bring some known concepts at some other place (like say using water filled tank kind of models) can fetch you really a good boost. But again it’s not easy to get upto the mark to think like an Archimedes to use bucket of water in the bathroom to solve some volume and wt problem of irregular shapes and that with a time constraint of few hours, but yes the good thing is in the competitive world you have to get your best within those few hours and every one is given the same, so it’s quite fair!...

I would say take out complete knowledge from you – technical, subjects you have learnt, skills which you have got, tricks which you may have used to win GALLI games, all and try to see how to solve a given problem and given people know diff things from their backgrounds you can also solve the same problem differently. An architect may put lots of his skills to solve the issues from structural, artistic, drawings, think big-mega, etc skills where as an electronic engg may solve it based on his know how of the tools and methods in his area and both has equal opportunity to flourish.

Observation Skills Assessment
Many times in your paper you will be shown a picture and you will be asked your observations as different user profiles. Some of the examples are given below

Sample question -
Here is the picture on a typical day at VT station in Mumbai around 5PM in the evening. Answer the following in reference to this picture

Q1. Imagine you are a kid of 10-12 yrs age, what would be your observations, thoughts, things which will catch your attention if you are standing here with your moher

Q2. Imagine you are a youth of 25 yrs age, what would be your observations, thoughts, things which will catch your attention if you are standing here

Q3. Imagine you are a adult of 40-45 yrs age, what would be your observations, thoughts, things which will catch your attention if you are standing here

My Notes- Here you have to be very observative to make sure you can write about a page of document about each of the sub-questions in your answer. For this it's very importent to understand the nature of the user pprofiles mentioned in this question. You have to put yourself in the shooes of these users and imagine if you stand here what would you think or talk about.

Another sample question

Imagine a following situation in the cricket where one team has taken a wicket by catching-out the opponent team memer in the match among two countries and answer following questions

Q1. Imagine you are the captain of the fielding team what would be user thoughs, startegies, observations in this situation?

Q2. If you are the person who are playing for the 1st time for the country and you took this catch, what would you be thinking in the mind?

Q3. If you are the person who got out on 99 and walking back as shown what are the thoughts going into your mind?

My Notes - this is a completely different case than the 1st quetion here the age groups of all the user profiles are same but if you look little deeper the thinkin going in the mind for all of these 3 people would be different and this is very importent to capture in your answer.

Answers of these questions though are not going to be same or there is no correct answer you need to have some clear differentiators in your answer...

Example - Hating the crowd in the example of the mumbail VT station could be common observation, or this pitch is my favorites or i hate it could be possible common in the cricket case, more than such observations the real crucks are in giving real differentiators and may be few commons too.

The Design Degree Show, (DDS)

This is being held at IDC, IIT Bombay during 10th, 11th and 12th of June 2006. New aspirants can go to IDC on these dates to get to see how and what the designers do at IDC. This is a showcase of the designers work where you can meet then and ask questions about the concepts as well as get to meet IDC faculty in person.

So any aspirants this is amust attend show!

Someone asked me about this.... so here is some more info on institutes....

Little about the design institutes

IDC – Best among all, can be compared to NID. One of the selling propositions of this is PD and VC study together and have very well equipped labs to try out most of things. Good faculty better get in soon to catch the sr. faculty for their inputs.
IDDC – Second best, good infrastructure blessed as 2nd design school in IITs.
CPDM – Descent, has more stress on functionality and working models. Job market for this after few yrs of experience is quite comparable with IDC.
IIT Kanpur – I do not have much data about this.

Just to complete the list I would not mind adding NID to this as they too have been doing great work and my personal opinion would be if you get into IDC fine or else try NID before anything else, but this is my personal opinion.

NOTE – Nid runs it’s own design test. I do not have much data about it..

What's tested in CEED from the aspirants

This is what is tested in CEED, just a guideline not a bible or exam paper format. As you would see there is no definite answer for any of these questions it in addition to solution following does equally matter

What matters
1. Impression - overall impression (assume your paper like a business presentation asking 1 million dollar so you need to create best impression possible)
2. Presentation (avoid shabby paper work)
3. Structure of information
4. Though process – how did you come to it…
5. Any innovative way of presenting your paper
6. Consistency
7. Highlighting the USPs in your solutions
8. Creativity in answers and presentation - Remember pictures talk more but if you are not a good drawing expert better write in some creative way!..
9. Ability to think out of the box – Avoid general answers… the questions here are asked to get how your mind can think out of the box than the average person’s thinking. Thumb rule could be – if 2 of your friends can think the same about something it may not fly… but in some cases you may want to think what people think so better be cautious or awake answering them…

Some areas which typically tested are -
• Observation Skills
o How many circular objects can you think
o Make/draw objects from triangles
o For any public place photo you will be asked what will you be thinking if you go here as 10 yr kid, 20yr youth, 40 yr adult or say aged person

• Design capabilities
o Design a torch for kids
o Design the alarm bell be used for public places

• Quick thinking
o Solve many problems in bulk… as time is important for CEED tests, you need to think quickly and creatively faster while solving the paper…

• Problem solving
o At wash basins you will always see the soap in the mess, solve this problem
o Public place shoe racko How to avoid children putting fingers in the electric sockets
o Design the mobile for blind

• Resource utilization
o Come out with a school bag from a rope of say 10 meters
o Use paper to build a filing cabinet
o You have metal sheet of 1mtr X 1mtr and a wire come out with a shoe rack with maximum capacity to hold, avoid welding and screws etc.

• Drawing and rendering skills (got some wt for these too)
o Draw a 3d view of an iron
o Draw the earphone
o Design and draw the gas stove
